Dear Parents,
I hope you will find the school’s prospectus helpful and interesting. If you have any
more questions about KRS please contact me or Rob McCarthy, Deputy Head on 24 74
4776. Please remember that we are two hours ahead of UK time and the school day
for pupils finishes at 13.30.
Our equivalent of a UK school’s Governing Body is the School Advisory Committee
(SAC), whose Chair is the Garrison Commander and the Secretary to whom all
enquiries should be made is the O.C. 54 AEC (Tel: 24 74 4224).
Arrangements for the admission of children of entitled personnel, those working in the
ESBA or the UN at Nicosia, are straightforward. With this prospectus you should
receive an admission form which asks for yours and your child’s personal details.
These should be returned to the school secretary. Your child will be admitted almost
immediately. For the children of non-entitled personnel there will be a delay while we
wait for the required security clearance. We are allowed to admit up to 15% of our
number from this source.
As with all UK schools KRS teaches Religious Education and the pupils follow the
guidelines for providing broadly Christian collective worship in its assemblies. Parents
do have the right to request that their children be withdrawn from part or all of these
activities. Please contact me directly if this is the case so that we can discuss the issue
and alternative provision.
You also have the right to withdraw your child from the school’s sex education
programme, except where it forms part of National Curriculum Science. The syllabus is
taught by specialists, often using an outside speaker, and by form tutors during the
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) lessons. Details of the course, its
materials and how the groups are organised are available from Mrs. Parker at school.
This is a small school, with numbers during the last year ranging from 160 - 185
pupils. Your child will be taught in small groups, setted for Maths and Languages and
with support for pupils who have Special Educational Needs. You will see from the
results that our young people do well in National Curriculum tests and GCSEs. We try
to ensure that every pupil has a full opportunity to sit all appropriate exams. For those
arriving during their GCSE courses we have an experienced and flexible teaching staff
who will do all that they can to ensure that your child’s progress is maintained and who
will assist your son or daughter in making up lost ground often caused by a transfer or
change of exam course.
Arrangements exist to deal with any complaints from parents. Depending on the nature
of the complaint these can be dealt with quickly by the form tutor or Key Stage co-
ordinator. More serious issues can come to me or the Deputy Head. If you do not want
to involve the school in the first instance then you can correspond with the SAC
secretary. Clearly, we hope that the school will always be able to deal satisfactorily with
your concerns.
At school we keep all copies of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES)
circulars about the National Curriculum and statutory guidelines. There are also copies
of the Annual Report to Parents, OFSTED documentation and the schemes of work
followed by all departments. As a parent you have a right to see copies of any of these
documents.
When your child is admitted to KRS we enter into a three-way contract between school,
pupil and parent. For our part we want to provide a safe and stimulating environment;
we want your son or daughter to enjoy school, to work hard and to have a real sense of
progress being made. In the prospectus we outline how you as a parent can help
make this a successful partnership.
I look forward to meeting you soon, and welcoming your family to King Richard School.
Yours sincerely,
A L Jamieson
Headteacher
